dumbdogdesigns on Etsy

I came across dumbdogdesigns whilst aimlessly ambling through the Star Wars art work on Etsy. He specialises in what can only be described as Industrial looking art using rusted metal as his medium. There’s an element of humour in some of his art that i also enjoyed. (Below are examples of his Star Wars work.)

Admiral Ackbar:

Boba Fett:

Jabba the Hutt:

Stormtrooper:

Personally, i thought that this was quite an unusual choice and would look different in amongst my growing collection of prints and artwork, so i contacted him to enquire about commissions for Millennium Falcon pieces for Han Solo, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian and Nien Numb. (I thought that the four related pieces would look great going up the stairs.) I initially envisaged the character silhouette with the outline of the Millennium Falcon inside the image. Today he came back to me with some ideas which i am taken with as the Falcon takes centre stage. I’d love to hear your opinions.

Of them all, i like the Nien Numb and Chewbacca ones the most, but i’d love to hear what you guys think.

(The you can see more work from the artist here and here.)

25/01/12: An update on the works. I’m pleased so far.

08/02/12: Here’s a photo of the Nien Numb one. It’s on it’s way to me now.

About mffanrodders

A keen Star Wars collector since 1977, my collection focus seems to have taken on a turn towards Han Solo's iconic Star Ship. Why the Millennium Falcon? No one else seemed to have one at the time and it was fair to say that i had difficulty resisting the higher end models. My friend, icruise from Rebelscum has a superb blog for his Jabba the Hutt collection, I thought that i'd start this blog to chart my own collection of Millennium Falcon related stuff as it increases. Well, that was the plan but it now seems to be more about cataloguing any Millennium Falcon item in general now so that i can come back to them later.

I’m still thinking about the Jabba one. I talked to the guy and he said that after painting the design, he had to leave the metal outside for about 6 months to get the level of rust he wanted. I don’t really like the design of leia’s bra etched into his face though.

Having four of those falcon designs lined up together would be pretty impressive, to be sure.

Yeah they’re all pretty sweet but I’m not a fan of leia’s bra on his face either. I think that the pieces you want would turn out well and would look good on your stair case.Though, it sounds like it could be kind of costly! I think I might tell you to try to buy that original by Brian Rood first if you happen to have the dough! At least shipping would be cheaper! I think it really depends on what you want for your collection. If you’re trying to get more original one of a kind type pieces, go with the Etsy artist. Or really, just go with your gut. Everyone has different tastes in art and different aims for their collections. If these pieces really SING to you, buy them! Sometimes a piece just says “hey… I think it might be cool if we could live together.” Other times it screams “TAKE ME HOME WITH YOU RIIIIIGHT BLOODY NOW!!!” =D

The metal kind of reminds me of an American sculpture artist, named Richard Serra, who does HUGE pieces with red rusty iron. A lot of them are situated permanently in outdoor locations.

The cost isn’t bad at all. He’s charging $450 plus postage. For four items, that’s pretty good. He’s also allowing me to pay in monthly installments. I just can’t pass that up. I am looking forward to seeing the finished articles though.

As for the Brian Rood piece, i’d love to get that, but i just can’t afford $600 in one hit. Besides, i may be in with an opportunity to get the Attakus Diorama paying monthly. 🙂

That Attakus diorama is definitely a grail item, especially for somebody like you!

Yeah, i’m not sure if the person’s going to go for it though. I might try and make valiant stab at saving for it this year though. (I have seen some on ebay.fr for a while now.)
